Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as an outstanding example of courage in Latin America. According to the committee chairman, she has become a unifying figure in the region:
“This is the essence of democracy: our collective readiness to defend the principles of popular governance, even when our opinions differ. In the face of threats to democracy, defending these principles has become more important than ever,” noted Jorgen Watne Fridnes.
He also emphasized that the work to restore democracy in Venezuela is fraught with dangers. Machado has been advocating for free and fair elections for over 20 years, stressing that it is a choice between ballots and bullets. She continues to fight for freedom, the committee chairman added.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also experienced disappointment in not receiving the award, as he actively campaigned for it. However, the application deadlines had expired in January, right at the beginning of his second presidential term.
