The Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov, noted that since 2023, 3.4 million tons of oil from Kazakhstan have been sent to international markets via the BTC pipeline. Discussing mutually beneficial cooperation, the parties are considering the possibility of increasing transit to 7 million tons per year by 2027. This was announced at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission dealing with trade and economic relations between the two countries.
According to the ministry's data, oil exports via BTC, operated by the British company BP, decreased from 19.39 million tons in January-August 2024 to 18.35 million tons in the same period of 2025. A reduction in the pumping of Kazakh and Turkmen oil was also noted, which amounted to 2.88 million tons, compared to 3.58 million tons a year earlier.
In July, there were issues with the quality of Azeri BTC oil, which caused a suspension of the transportation of Kazakh crude due to increased levels of organic chlorides. However, in September, shipments from the Kashagan field were resumed.
Kazakhstan plans to end the year with an export of 1.7 million tons of oil via BTC, which corresponds to the level of the previous year.
The length of the pipeline connecting Baku and the port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean Sea is 1,768 km. It is capable of transporting up to 1.2 million barrels of oil per day, with the potential to increase this figure to 2.2 million barrels.
