Almost half of Switzerland's population supports the idea of introducing restrictions on the number of citizens. This initiative was proposed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, which suggests setting a cap of 10 million people. According to supporters of this idea, migration contributes to rapid population growth, which in turn negatively affects housing, local transportation, and public services. According to a survey conducted for the newspapers 20 Minuten and Tamedia, 48% of respondents are willing to vote for this measure, while 41% expressed opposition.
Supporters of this plan report that a referendum could take place as early as June, although the government has not yet confirmed this information. Other political forces in Switzerland are calling to reject this proposal, warning of potential harm to the economy and well-being, as many Swiss companies depend on the labor resources of foreign citizens.
As of spring 2025, Switzerland had a population of 9,048,900 people. Representatives of the right-wing party claim that if the population exceeds 9.5 million, the authorities will have to terminate existing international agreements that facilitate migration to the country.
