According to the UN, 354 million people continue to practice open defecation, which means they relieve themselves in the streets – in fields, bushes, or forests, without the ability to wash their hands with soap afterward. The UN News Service reports on this alarming situation.

This issue primarily affects rural residents of Central, Southern, and Eastern Asia, as well as Tropical Africa.

Women and girls are particularly vulnerable in this context, as they face the risk of violence due to the necessity of exposing themselves in unsafe conditions.

In addition, the lack of toilets and sewage systems negatively impacts the environment and exacerbates the problem of global warming, as highlighted in UN materials.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the creation of "toilets that meet the needs of the future."

"Let’s make access to safe sanitation a reality for everyone," he noted.
