At the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, taking place in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), participants decided to establish a World Day of Turkic Languages, which will be celebrated on December 15. This was reported by the UN News Service.

The resolution emphasizes that the creation of the World Day of Turkic Languages will contribute to the implementation of UNESCO's priorities related to linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as regional and international cooperation, the preservation of oral traditions, and forms of self-expression.

It is noted that the initiative was supported by representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, as well as 21 member countries.

"The choice of December 15 is not accidental: on this day in 1893, Danish scholar Wilhelm Thomsen announced the deciphering of the Orkhon inscriptions alphabet — one of the oldest written testimonies confirming the origin of the Turkic language group, which includes Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkish, Turkmen, and Uzbek languages," the UN News Service added.

Various events are planned for the World Day of Turkic Languages, including cultural presentations, exhibitions, lectures, literary evenings, and theatrical performances aimed at demonstrating the cultural and social significance of Turkic languages as an element of cultural diversity in Turkic-speaking countries, as well as raising awareness of the contribution of Turkic languages to the development of humanity.

Turkic languages are native to more than 200 million people who live across an area of about 12 million square kilometers in several countries that are part of UNESCO.
