International Snow Leopard Day


In the Bishkek Declaration of the World Forum on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard, one of the points noted the declaration of October 23 as the annual International Snow Leopard Day. A Youth Conference titled "Day of the Snow Leopard" was held at the K. Karalaev Bishkek Humanities University.

The event was organized by the working secretariat of the Global Program for the Conservation of the Snow Leopard and its Ecosystems, the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, and the K. Karalaev Bishkek Humanities University.

Representatives from the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic, representatives from leading higher educational institutions of the Kyrgyz Republic, and representatives in the field of environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, including those focused on snow leopard protection such as the Snow Leopard Trust (SLT), the German Nature Conservation Union “NABU”, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and others participated in the conference.

The main goal of the youth conference was to draw public attention in Kyrgyzstan to the threat of snow leopard extinction, discuss issues related to the protection and conservation of snow leopard habitats, instill a value-based attitude towards the environment among the youth, form a conscious and ecologically literate position among the youth, and promote environmental education.

On October 22, 2014, a youth flash mob dedicated to October 23 - International Snow Leopard Day - took place in the old square of the capital.

The event was organized by the working secretariat of the Global Program for the Conservation of the Snow Leopard and its Ecosystems, the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the American University of Central Asia, and the German Nature Conservation Union “NABU”.

Students from the American University of Central Asia and the K. Karalaev Bishkek Humanities University participated in the flash mob.

The main goals of the youth flash mob were:
to draw public attention to the threat of snow leopard extinction;
to raise awareness about the issues of protecting and conserving snow leopard habitats;
to promote a careful attitude towards the environment;
to instill a value-based attitude towards the environment among the youth.

The World Forum on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard took place on October 22-23, 2013, in Bishkek at the initiative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic A. Sh. Atambayev, with the participation of senior officials from environmental agencies of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Kingdom of Bhutan, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of India, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan, represented at the level of the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Kyrgyz Republic.

With the active support of all the countries in the snow leopard's habitat, the Bishkek Declaration on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard was unanimously adopted, and a comprehensive Global Program for the Conservation of the Snow Leopard was approved, laying the foundation for mutual understanding of the problems and principles for the development of high-altitude landscapes in the context of climate change.
