National Statistical Committee: Female Population Predominates in Cities of Kyrgyzstan, While Male Population Prevails in Villages
In urban settlements of Kyrgyzstan, the female population predominates, reports the National Statistical Committee in its study.
In rural areas, on the contrary, there is a male majority. According to the latest counts, the country's population is 6 million 257 thousand people - of which 3 million 155 thousand are women and 3 million 102 thousand are men.
“The distribution of the population by gender in the republic is uneven. In urban settlements, the proportion of women exceeded that of men and amounted to 52.5%, while in rural areas, where birth rates are higher, men slightly prevail at 50.6%,” the study states.
Moreover, the female population begins to dominate the overall structure around the age of 40, and among those over 80 years old, their number is almost twice that of men. This difference is mainly due to disparities in age-specific mortality rates between the male and female populations.
The age and gender structure of the republic's population is also uneven. The number of children under 5 years old significantly exceeds the number of young people aged 20-24 and 25-29. This was facilitated by a significant increase in birth rates in the 2000s.
In Kyrgyzstan, almost every sixth marriage registered in the civil registry offices ends in divorce. This statistic was calculated by specialists from the National Statistical Committee, referencing official data.
According to the study, for every 1000 marriages in rural areas, there are 160 cases of divorce. In urban settlements, the number of divorces exceeds this figure by more than twice.
The average age at first marriage for women was 23.7 years, and for men - 27.1 years. Compared to 2013, the marriage age for women increased by 0.3 years, and for men - by 0.4 years.
An interesting fact is that while women make up the majority of the total population of Kyrgyzstan, the predominance of the fairer sex is found among the older age group, specifically from 40 years old, and among those over 80 years old, their number is almost twice that of men.
Thus, the ratio of women to men younger than working age in Kyrgyzstan is 48.8%, among the working-age population – 48.8%, and among those older than this age category – 70%.
