According to local authorities, as a result of heavy snowfalls that have affected northeastern Japan, at least 28 people have died and nearly 300 have been injured, reports TASS.
The highest number of casualties has been recorded in the prefectures of Niigata (12 people), Akita (8 people), and Hokkaido (5 people). Fatalities have also been reported in Yamagata and Aomori.
Among the deceased are those who fell from roofs while clearing snow, as well as those who experienced health issues while clearing roads and sidewalks. Additionally, the statistics include cases related to the exacerbation of chronic illnesses, all linked to the consequences of the snowfalls.
In recent days, heavy snowfalls have been observed in several prefectures, including Niigata, Hokkaido, Akita, and Yamagata.
Weather forecasters predict that snowfalls will continue in the coming days. It is expected that by the morning of January 31, an additional 70 cm of snow will fall in Niigata Prefecture, and up to 50 cm in the northeastern areas of Honshu Island.
Weather conditions may cause disruptions in public transport. Japanese airlines advise passengers to monitor flight status updates. In particular, Japan Airlines has already reported the cancellation of five of its flights.
