Specialists from the solar astronomy laboratory of the IKI RAS reported that the strongest magnetic storm of February occurred on Earth, as reported by RIA Novosti.

“The G2 level magnetic storm began and ended at night, making it the strongest of this month,” the scientists noted.

According to their observations, solar activity has appeared unusual lately.

“We are observing short single flares that occur without visible reasons, followed by silence. The auroras last only 40 minutes, and the magnetic storm lasted less than an hour. It seems that the Sun is selling off the last remnants of its activity,” the astronomers added.

Magnetic storms are classified on a five-point scale. G1 level storms are the weakest and have little to no effect on the operation of electrical devices. A G3 level storm is considered strong and can cause disruptions in radio communication and satellite navigation. The highest level, G5, can lead to significant problems with power grids and disruptions in satellite and radio communications.
