Sport fisherman Aibek Algodzhoev shared his methods for catching silver perch in the conditions of the deep winter:
“The mid-winter period (deep winter) is a real test for sport fishermen. During this time, oxygen under the ice becomes scarce, which leads to a decrease in fish activity. In my opinion, the challenging conditions make fishing more exciting. Winter fishing during the New Year holidays is a great way to relax after a busy work schedule. Catching perch means constantly moving across the ice of the water body. The key point is finding the fish. This is the first step to successful fishing. The more spots you explore, the higher the chance of a good catch. The next step is playing with a jig without bait. In the conditions of deep winter, we catch predators using only jigs, and the approach to the play should be varied: you can pause at the bottom, make sharp rises, and smooth descents. Try fishing at different water levels. Don’t forget to return to already drilled holes, especially if they have been baited. A hole in winter is a kind of source of oxygen, and bait only enhances its attractiveness for perch. A bite may start in such a hole within 30-40 minutes, which has been repeatedly confirmed in practice.”
