Mikhail Ivanovich Novikovsky


Theater artist, Honored Artist of the RSFSR. Born on August 19, 1919, in the city of Yeysk.

He studied at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture named after I.E. Repin, which he could not complete due to the Great Patriotic War. In 1941, he went to the front as a military correspondent. From 1969 to 1974, he worked as the chief artist of the Uzbek Academic State Theater named after Alisher Navoi (Tashkent). Since 1975, he worked as the chief artist of the Kyrgyz State Opera and Ballet Theater in Frunze.

Since 1962, he has been a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

M. Novikovsky has staged over 120 performances in various theaters. He is a professionally inventive artist, mastering all means of creating decorative spectacle on stage. Working predominantly in the traditional manner of decorative art, he closely followed the development of modern scenography, sometimes easily and accurately employing a number of new means and techniques if they corresponded to the character of the visual solution he envisioned for the performance.

Sketches and models of theater decorations by M. Novikovsky are housed in the State Central Museum of Musical Culture named after M.I. Glinka in Moscow, the museum of the Uzbek State Academic Theater named after A. Navoi (Tashkent), and the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts named after G. Aitiev.

Awarded the Honorary Certificate of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR.
