Deputy Dastan Bekeshev initiated a discussion on the possibility of changing the requirements for school uniforms in Kyrgyzstan. He voiced this proposal at a parliamentary meeting on February 25.

In his opinion, the focus is placed on the appearance of clothing rather than on education and content.

“The school uniform certainly doesn’t look bad, but it can be uncomfortable. We often make decisions without considering the opinions of children. In other countries, students do not adhere to the same style — suits and trousers. If you don’t dress as is customary, you will be judged,” Bekeshev noted.

He also pointed out particularly difficult situations in some regions.

“We shouldn’t completely abandon the school uniform, as it was introduced to maintain discipline. However, let’s make the requirements more flexible. Why can’t students come in more comfortable clothing? For example, in t-shirts, sweaters, and jeans. Why must female students wear skirts? Is that someone’s decision? This is essentially a legacy of the Soviet era,” the deputy added.

Bekeshev believes that a "smart casual" style should be implemented, which combines the elegance of business attire with the comfort of everyday wear.

He proposed that the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Education grant schools the right to independently determine the requirements for uniforms.

Additionally, Bekeshev noted that the dress code for deputies should also be reconsidered, emphasizing that not all parliamentarians wear classic suits. “Why should a security guard decide how visitors are dressed? These norms should be reviewed,” he concluded.
