Klara Sooronkulova, a former judge of the Constitutional Court, noted in her interview that the constitutional reform carried out in 2021 changed the status of the president, which, in her opinion, may affect the procedure for holding presidential elections and the possibility of re-election of the current president.
She reminded that the current president was elected in January 2021, and the new version of the Constitution was approved in a nationwide referendum on April 11, 2021. This means that the elections were held under the old rules, after which changes were made to the Basic Law just two months later.
According to Sooronkulova, after the adoption of the new version of the Constitution, it would be advisable to hold new presidential elections, as the powers and status of the head of state have changed. At the same time, she emphasized that there is no need to wait for the end of the current term, as under the new Constitution the president has the right to run for a new term, and there are no obstacles to this," she added.
