In Kyrgyzstan, there is significant degradation of pastures, which is associated with the lack of effective management after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the absence of control over livestock grazing. This was reported by Natalia Kilyazova, head of the pasture and feed department at the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures, in an interview on the radio.

Kilyazova noted that since 1991, the practice of pasture rotation and pasture turnover has been discontinued in the country, and no improvement measures have been implemented.

“For 20-25 years, pastures have essentially remained without proper care. Due to the lack of a systematic approach, each farmer grazed livestock at their discretion,” she explained.

The expert emphasized that the most serious degradation is observed in pastures located near populated areas.

“Farmers were not inclined to move livestock to seasonal and summer pastures. As a result, the load on nearby areas significantly increased, while remote pastures began to overgrow with weeds,” she added.

In addition, Kilyazova pointed to unregulated grazing and high livestock concentration in areas with better forage quality as additional causes of degradation.

“Everyone chooses the most favorable pasture, avoiding areas with shrubs. As a result, such places quickly become depleted, while overgrown areas remain neglected,” she concluded.
