- The quality of road materials and the implementation of stone-mastic asphalt and concrete should be a focal point in the construction of highways. This statement was made by former Minister of Transport Jamshitbek Kalilov on the radio.

He pointed out that this technology first appeared in Kyrgyzstan thanks to the specialists of the PII "Kyrgzdortransproject." The first section with stone-mastic asphalt was laid in 2016, and over a ten-year period of operation, including challenging mountainous conditions, this section has not even required average repairs, he added.

Kalilov noted that under similar conditions, average road repairs usually begin after ten years; however, in this case, the road surface retains its operational characteristics. This is due to the fact that the service life of stone-mastic asphalt and concrete is 2.5 times longer than that of regular asphalt.

Nevertheless, the former minister expressed criticism regarding the quality of some urban roads, where, according to him, only the top layer is used without the appropriate materials, creating the illusion of repair.

He also raised the issue of road safety, emphasizing the need to establish an independent road safety audit service within the Ministry of Transport. This structure should operate already at the design and operation stages of roads to minimize traffic accidents.

As an example, he mentioned the North-South road, where landslides and road surface destruction are observed. In his opinion, timely audits during the construction phase could have anticipated protective galleries and prevented emergency situations.
