The President Rumen Radev, who has been leading Bulgaria since 2017, announced his intention to resign. He stated this in his address to the nation, as reported by RIA Novosti. “Tomorrow I will submit my resignation as President of the Republic of Bulgaria,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of his decision.
For the official completion of his term, Radev will have to wait for the Constitutional Court to approve his resignation, which must confirm the authenticity of his intentions. If the decision is positive, the functions of the president will pass to Vice President Iliana Yotova, who has already confirmed her readiness to perform duties in this position.
Radev noted that during the nine years spent in the roles of president and vice president, his team demonstrated effective cooperation and cohesion in their work.
In his address, he also criticized the existing political system, claiming that it "has external signs of democracy but operates on the mechanisms of oligarchy."
Rumen Radev became the fifth president of Bulgaria and previously held the position of commander of the country's Air Force from 2014 to 2016. His candidacy in the presidential elections was put forward as independent, but with the support of the socialists. In 2021, he was successfully re-elected for a second term.
