The initiative of the U.S. president evokes mixed opinions
President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new "Council of Peace" on Gaza, to which 58 world leaders are invited. This international forum will focus on implementing a peace plan and restoring the region.
The signing ceremony of the charter is scheduled for January 22 in Davos, as part of the World Economic Forum.
Among the invitees are more than 50 countries, including states such as Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of the European Commission.
Opinions on the new initiative are divided. The King of Bahrain has already expressed readiness to participate in the Council, while France has declined, citing potential duplication of the UN's functions and an expansion of the mandate beyond Gaza. Some countries prefer to adopt a wait-and-see approach for now.
The results of the charter signing in Davos will show whether the Council will truly be an effective tool for achieving peace or will remain merely a political declaration.
