NAME OF THE INFANT (AT KOYUU)

The wise elders have always believed that a child's future largely depends on the name given to them. Therefore, parents strive to choose a name for their child that will bring them happiness, luck, and honor. This tradition originated during the time when the Kyrgyz people adopted the Islamic religion.

The beginning of the ceremony is marked by the proclamation of the azan, when an honored guest, turning towards the west (the direction Muslims face when praying to Allah), calls out "Allahu Akbar!" three times, followed by the name of the newborn. This address to the Almighty aims to inform people about the birth of the infant and to give them a name in the presence of others. The performance of this rite is entrusted to one of the closest and most respected individuals.

The celebration is very joyful. The gathered guests sincerely congratulate the parents and wish them that the chosen name brings only happiness and luck to the child.

PUT ON A HORSE (ATKA MINGIZUU)

Among the nomadic Kyrgyz, there are legends, myths, songs, tales, and customs associated with Kambar-ata (the spiritual patron of horses). One such custom is "put on a horse."

With a sense of pride, the father places his 5-6-year-old son on a colt and gives him the reins for the first time. Then, the most honored elder takes the reins and begins to lead the colt around the village with the boy confidently sitting in the saddle.

It is believed that in the future, the son should replace his father in everything and be a good master in the household. In honor of this rite, the parents organize a festive celebration, and the elder aksakals, blessing the child, explain to him that from this moment on, he becomes a true jigit.
