Legends of the Lakes
AIDYN-KUL
In ancient times, swans would fly to Lake Aidyn-Kul at night, shed their feathers, transform into beautiful maidens, and bathe in it. This was Aichurek, the wife of Semetey, with her friends. They would come on moonlit nights when the lake was radiant and majestic, and that is why, apparently, the elders say, the lake has been called Aidyn-Kul ever since.
KOKUY-KUL
There lived an old woman. She had a son. One day he went swimming in the lake. The mother waited a long time for her son, and finally, she went to the lake herself and saw his clothes on the shore. It was already night, and the mother realized that her son had drowned. She began to scream: "Kokuy! Kokuy!" She jumped into the water and also drowned.
People say that the mother carries her son on her back and cannot reach the shore, only moaning: "Kokuy! Kokuy!" Since then, this lake has been called the lake of misfortune, Kokuy-Kul.
