The Legend of the Tower of Burana

Once, Khan Baytik decided to capture Tokmak. Not far from the city, in a gorge, he left his daughter with her entourage, while he and his army headed towards the city. The khan dealt harshly with the townspeople: he spared neither the old, nor the women, nor the children—he ordered them all to be killed. Only one old woman managed to escape.

She came to the khan and said: "You have killed everyone, you have killed my sons. But remember: your only daughter, whom you love very much, will die here from the bite of a black widow spider."

Enraged, the khan ordered the old woman to be killed and immediately had a tower built. In the very top part of it, he placed his daughter with two maidservants, who brought food to her through a high door made above the ground. Only by mounting a horse could one reach that door.

One day, the servants delivered a dish of grapes to the khan's daughter. And no one noticed that a black widow spider was hiding in the bunch. She reached out for the grapes, screamed, and soon died. Since then, the empty tower has stood near Tokmak.
