The museum-reserve was established in 1949 with the creation of the Osh Regional Local History Museum. The museum was opened to visitors on February 1, 1951. The exhibition area was 65 sq. m, with a collection of 268 exhibits. Significant assistance in forming the collections was provided by scientific expeditions and archaeological excavations conducted jointly with the Fergana Regional Local History Museum and the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences since 1951. In 1964, an ancient building—a 16th-century archaeological monument—was transferred to the museum at the foot of Sulayman Mountain. The exhibition area increased to 420 sq. m. In 1968, an exhibition hall with an area of 272 sq. m was added to the main building. In 1974, an administrative building with a hall on the second floor was constructed. In 1978, the local history museum was transformed into a historical and local history museum, and a unique cave complex built inside the mountain was transferred to it. The complex consists of 13 halls on 2 floors (area 752 sq. m). The museum has 5 departments: nature, scientific collections, history of the pre-Soviet period, and cultural and mass events. By 1986, the main collection consisted of 29,252 storage units. There are 36 scientific staff members at the museum. In 1985, the museum was visited by 154,300 people. The first director of the museum was its organizer B. Asrankulov. Subsequently, the museum was led by A. Abdrasulov and A. Adenov. Significant contributions to the development of the museum were made by researchers A. Kupil, A. Zakharova, E. Druzhinina, and others.
