PM2.5 consists of solid particles smaller than 2.5 microns, which is 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. These particles include a mixture of dust, ash, soot, as well as sulfates and nitrates suspended in the air. They contribute to the deterioration of air quality, which is characteristic of large megacities.
As of October 27, Bishkek ranks 9th in the world city ranking for air pollution (5:00 PM).
