“Today we officially celebrate this day for the first time, and it fills me with special pride, as the initiative was proposed right here on Kyrgyz land. Our people, who have a deep connection with the mountains and the snow leopard, suggested this significant event, and the world has heard us,” he said.
He also emphasized that the UN resolution proclaiming the International Snow Leopard Day was adopted unanimously, which is not only a diplomatic achievement but also a symbol of humanity's unity in matters of nature conservation.
According to the president, the snow leopard and Kyrgyzstan are inseparably linked.
“The snow leopard embodies the soul of our mountains and is a symbol of freedom and devotion to our land. This predator, like our people, does not leave its icy peaks even in the most difficult times. We, the descendants of great mountains, draw inspiration and strength from their heights,” he added.
Japarov noted that our ancestors, like the snow leopard, preserved their cultural values for centuries. Their resilience and will allowed them to overcome many trials. “We, as descendants of this glorious people, defend our homeland and preserve traditions, remaining true to our roots,” he emphasizes.
The president believes that Kyrgyzstan's initiative at the UN was a natural step.
“The issue of protecting the snow leopard concerns not only a rare species that is endangered but also our people, who are part of this ecosystem. To protect the snow leopard means to safeguard our identity. Preserving its habitat is protecting the water sources on which a third of the Earth's population depends,” he noted.
“This day is not just an opportunity to admire the beauty of the snow leopard. It is a call to humanity to unite efforts to protect this unique animal and its ecosystem,” Japarov added.
On this day, Kyrgyzstan is initiating a global campaign in honor of the snow leopard, emphasizing the importance of its survival for the ecosystem and our future.
On October 23, we will dedicate 23 minutes to walking and physical activity outdoors in its honor. Protecting nature is our common task, and preserving the snow leopard is our victory!” he concluded.
