A World Press Photo Exhibition Will Take Place in Bishkek
The Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts named after G. Aitiev is preparing to host a large-scale photo exhibition. On January 9, Bishkek will kick off the display of the best works from the international photojournalism competition World Press Photo based on the results of 2014.
According to the curator of the exhibition, Elena Voronina, the uniqueness of the exhibition lies not only in the fact that the competition is prestigious on a global level. This is the second time in its history that World Press Photo will be in Central Asia. Before arriving in the capital of Kyrgyzstan in December, the event, which is attended by about 2 million people annually, was held in Kazakhstan — in the cities of Astana and Almaty. The display of the World Press Photo 2014 results will take place in Bishkek from January 9 to 22. During this time, residents will be able to see around 140 photographs, which the jury of the competition recognized as the best shots of 2014.
The material features a photograph recognized as the best competition work in 2014. The author of the shot is American John Stanmeyer, who captured the struggle to catch a weak mobile phone signal in Djibouti (North Africa).
The exhibition, brought to Kyrgyzstan with the support of the diplomatic missions of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Canada, and the OSCE, will officially open on January 9 at 4:00 PM at the KNMII. This year, as reported by the curator of the event, the best works of World Press Photo 2014 will be showcased at a record number of venues: 105 museums and galleries in more than 40 countries around the world. Traditionally, the first location for the exhibition is Amsterdam: following the announcement of the results, the photo exhibition starts there and runs for two months before traveling around the world. According to the organizers, it is visited by about 2 million people annually. Last year, 5,754 photographers participated in the competition.
