International Snow Leopard Day


In 2013, the World Forum on Snow Leopard Conservation was held in Bishkek, which laid the foundation for the establishment of a new holiday — International Snow Leopard Day, celebrated on October 23.

The snow leopard, known as the irbis, is a rare and protected species listed in the Red Book. Its natural habitat is the mountainous regions of Central Asia.




As a result of joint discussions, a program for the protection of this unique animal was adopted on October 23, 2013, recorded in a declaration. This date was chosen for the celebration.

In September 2003, a 15-year agreement was signed between Russia and Kyrgyzstan to establish an aviation unit in Kant as part of the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces of the CSTO. The official opening of the air base took place on October 23, 2003.

In 2009, the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Russia, Kurmanbek Bakiev and Dmitry Medvedev, signed a memorandum on further development and improvement of the legal framework regarding the presence of Russian military personnel on the territory of the republic and the placement of additional contingents.

Yakov Logvinenko

On October 23, 1895, Yakov Logvinenko was born in Pishpek, an active fighter for Soviet power in Semirechye and Kyrgyzstan.

He was the commander of the 1st Pishpek Soviet Regiment, under whose leadership the Belovodsk uprising was suppressed in 1918.

In 1919, he became the commander of the Pishpek garrison and later held the position of military commissar of the Semirechensk tract.

He died on April 9, 1933, and was buried in a mass grave in Dubovy Park along with Red Guards. A street in Bishkek is named after him.

Junai Mavlyanov

On October 23, 1923, Junai Mavlyanov was born in the village of Kosh-Tyube in the Osh region, a distinguished teacher of the Kyrgyz SSR and a veteran of World War II.

He began writing in 1948, and in 1960 published a collection of poems titled "Zhurok" ("Heart").

After several poetry collections, he fully transitioned to prose. Among his works are the stories "My Diary" (1967), "Give a Hand" (1969), "Lightning" (1972), "Bread" (1973), "Life" (1979), "Mother" (1983), "Me and My Villagers" (1985), novellas "What’s Wrong with You, Bekish?" (1964), "Expectation" (1966), and novels "Clear Sky" (1972), "Height" (1977), "Irretrievable Years" (1995).
A film based on the novella "Archa with a Lonely Branch" was made in 1966.
In 1994, the name of Junai Mavlyanov was given to a boarding school in Kerben, Aksy district, as well as to a street in Bishkek.

He passed away on November 25, 2003.

Jalil Sadykov

Jalil Sadykov was born on October 23, 1932, in the village of Kichi-Kemin. He became a famous Kyrgyz poet, playwright, and translator.

Starting in 1950, his works began to be published. Among his books are "Ubada" (1958), "Summer Dawn" (1961), "Pages of the Centuries" (1964), "I Sing of the Motherland" (1968), "Unforgettable Melodies" (1971), "Plays" (1976), "Earthly Miracle" (1986), and others.

From 1980, he headed the repertoire and editorial board of the Ministry of Culture of the Kyrgyz SSR, and from 1981 to 1985, he was an advisor to the Union of Writers of the KR for the Naryn and Issyk-Kul regions. From 1988 to 1992, he worked as the chief editor of the newspaper "Kyrgyz Madeniyaty".
He is also the author of the lyrics of the national anthem of Kyrgyzstan.
Jalil Sadykov's trilogy "Manas's Son Semetey" (1982), "Seitek" (1987), "Aykol Manas" (1990) was staged at the Kyrgyz State Academic Drama Theater. His plays, such as "Er Toshduk", "Ak Moor", "Zhukejev-Pudovkin", were also staged in theaters across Kyrgyzstan.

He translated the works of many classical and contemporary poets into Kyrgyz.

Jalil Sadykov passed away in 2010.

Talgarbek Jakshylykov

Talgarbek Jakshylykov was born on October 23, 1964, in the family of an akyn-improviser.

In 1991, he participated in a vocalists' competition of the Central Asian republics and Kazakhstan and received the "Hope" prize.

He performed complex musical parts, such as Ramfis ("Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi), Gremin ("Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky), Bartolo and Don Basilio ("The Barber of Seville" by Gioachino Rossini), Khan Konchak ("Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin). He successfully performed in national operas, including roles of Bakai, Chynkojo, and Konurbai in the operas "Aychurek" and "Manas" and the dramatic part of Teitbek from the opera "Kurmanbek" by Nasyr Davlesov. He also performed concerts with parts for Boris Godunov, Melnik, Mephistopheles, and others.

In 2003, he became the People's Artist of the KR, and in 2006, he was awarded the Abdylas Maldybaev Prize. In the last years of his life, he dedicated himself to teaching students in the "Solo Singing" department at the Kyrgyz National Conservatory named after Kalyi Moldobasanov.

Talgarbek Jakshylykov passed away on March 14, 2024.

Evgeny Pisarsky


Evgeny Pisarsky passed away in 2013. He was a distinguished architect of the Kyrgyz SSR, a professor, a laureate of the State Prize, and a participant in the Great Patriotic War. He was the first honorary citizen of Bishkek.

The Further the War, the Closer the Victory


He was born in 1918 in the village of Filenino, Shakhovsky district, Moscow region.

In the winter of 1946, he arrived in Frunze on the direction of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. An architect from Moscow was sent to Kyrgosprom, where he developed his first project — the Tuberculosis Institute.

His projects included the Polytechnic and Trade Technical Schools, which now belong to the International University of Kyrgyzstan and the Kyrgyz Economic University. He also designed the building of "Kyrgyzpotrebsoyuz" on Theater Square, known to the youth as the "Aiyl Bank" building. The architectural solutions for the House of Artists and the House of Industrial Ministries on Chuy Avenue (now the Ministry of Economy building) also belong to him.

His designs for multi-story buildings of the 105th and 106th series are known not only in Bishkek but also beyond its borders. It is estimated that 60 to 70 percent of the capital's residents live or work in buildings designed by Evgeny Pisarsky.

One of his last works is the architectural part of the memorial "Heroes of Batken" near the Ministry of Defense building.
