ABOUT OLD NAMES OF THE STREETS OF BISHKEK
Understanding the network of streets and finding the necessary address is aided by the names of streets, squares, alleys, and other objects. Each of these names carries a certain semantic content, reflecting the spirit of the era, memorable events, and dates.
In pre-revolutionary Pishpek, there were streets whose names indicated the location of some object that stood out in appearance or was significant in meaning. These include Kazarmennaya, Bolnichnaya, Tserkovnaya, Kladbishchenskaya, Bazarovaya, Lagernaya, Barachnaya, Kuznechnaya, Bulvarnaya, Sadovaya, and Yarmarochnaya streets. Their names speak for themselves.
By the will of the authorities, some streets of the city were named after members of the royal dynasty: Nikolayevskaya, Aleksandrovskaya, Konstantinovskaya, and Petrovskaya. The names of royal administrators—officers, generals, and officials—were also immortalized. These included Griaznovskaya, Kolpakovskaya, Vasilevskaya, and Pushchinskaya streets.
It is interesting to note that there were streets named after the national identity of the majority of their residents. These are Tatar and Dungan streets. Some were named based on the social status of their residents, such as Meshchanskaya and Kupecheskaya.
A number of streets bore the names of geographical points and cities. These included Tashkent, Vernenskaya, Tokmakskaya, Alamedinskaya, Atbashinskaya, and Sokulukskaya; there were also streets named after other characteristics: Novaya, Soldatskaya, Uyezdnaya, Verkhnyaya, Klyuchevaya, Georgievskaya, Beregovaya, Krasnoryadskaya, Karasuyiskaya, etc.
Many of the named streets were subsequently renamed, while some still exist today.
