- During the forum "Agrodialog," which is taking place from February 18 to 21, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing Bakyt Torobaev spoke about plans to concrete the Big Chui Canals, which should help reduce water losses and lower the cost of agricultural products.

According to the minister, current global prices for agricultural goods fluctuate significantly. For example, the price of beans on the international market has dropped from $1600 to $900, which may result in the sale of products not covering farmers' costs.

“Reducing the cost of farmers' products is essential,” he noted.

Torobaev emphasized that one of the key areas of work is ensuring reliable and efficient water supply for agricultural lands. In this regard, it is planned to develop irrigation infrastructure, including the introduction of drip irrigation and the modernization of existing canals.

The minister reported the existence of three main Big Chui Canals: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The Western BCC is 146 km long, but only 3.9 km of it is covered with concrete. The Eastern BCC stretches for 97 km, of which concrete coverage exists for only 10 km. The Southern BCC, which is 36 km long, is lined with concrete over a section of 5.8 km.

“Most of the canals remain earthen, which leads to significant water losses,” he added.
