On February 28, 2026, Erlis Akunbekov, serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, visited the Chui region for work purposes. This event was covered by the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The main objective of the trip was to assess the current state of water management infrastructure and to check on the progress of reconstruction and construction works aimed at providing farmers with access to irrigation water.

During the visit to the Moscow district, the minister visited the Spartak Reservoir and the Ak-Suy Drainage Distribution Network, where the facility managers presented data on the technical condition of the structures, the level of siltation, and the efficiency of their operation.

In the Jayil district, Akunbekov familiarized himself with the operations of the Kara-Balta and Stepninsk Reservoirs, which supply water to thousands of hectares of irrigated agricultural land.

During the trip, it was noted that many reservoirs had not been cleaned for about 50 years, which negatively affected their design capacity. For example, one reservoir designed for 4.3 million cubic meters actually holds only 2 million and irrigates 2,100 hectares. Additional water volumes come from the Big Chui Canal and the Kara-Balta River.

As a result of the visit, instructions were given for the modernization of irrigation infrastructure, systematic cleaning and reconstruction of reservoirs, as well as improving the efficiency of water resource use.
