Manufacturers in Kyrgyzstan are facing difficulties in trying to get their products onto the shelves of large retail chains and international retailers. This information was shared by Uran Chekirbaev, head of the food security department at the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, during a radio broadcast.

He pointed out that one of the key reasons for these difficulties is the various cooperation conditions offered by large chains. This includes bonus schemes, penalties, and additional requirements, which complicate market access for local producers.

Chekirbaev also added that such practices are most commonly found among transnational chains operating in multiple countries and forming their own supply chain logistics.

In his opinion, it is important to consider the interests of local producers in such circumstances and to promote their wider presence in retail. He noted that in some countries, measures are taken to support national production, including requirements for a minimum share of local products on store shelves.

As an example, Chekirbaev cited international food service chains that, despite having local producers, continue to source some raw materials from abroad. He remarked, "Even brands like KFC buy potatoes, tomatoes, and poultry meat from other countries, even though these products can be produced in Kyrgyzstan."

Furthermore, he emphasized that government agencies must continue to work on creating conditions to improve access for domestic products to retail chains.

Chekirbaev also noted that the rise in food prices is due not only to internal factors but also to international processes. For example, the dynamics of prices have been influenced by disruptions in supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as rising incomes and increased domestic demand.

Climate change, including drought, also remains an important factor affecting the cost of feed, and consequently, the prices of meat, eggs, and other products.

Chekirbaev reminded that nearly 60% of Kyrgyzstan's population lives in rural areas and depends on agriculture, so state policy should take into account the interests of rural producers.
