According to the Dutch broadcaster NOS, the incident occurred at 1:00 AM at the church tower. Fortunately, no one was injured. However, due to debris being blown around by the wind, authorities evacuated residents of nearby buildings. A local yoga studio served as a temporary shelter for them. The return of people to their homes remains uncertain.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema visited the scene to assess the situation.

The cause of the fire, which affected the church built in 1872, has not yet been determined. Local residents speculate that fireworks may have caused the fire, but the fire department does not confirm this version.

A large crowd gathered at the scene, which created certain difficulties for emergency services, making it hard for them to access the fire's source.

Since 1977, the building has ceased to be a Catholic church and is now used for various celebrations, according to local authorities.
