In the Antarctic waters, near the South Shetland Islands, a group of Australian scientists has discovered a shark, which has become a real sensation, reports the Kazinform agency, citing AP.
The creature, with a massive body and clumsy swimming style, was moving along the lifeless seabed at a significant depth, which came as an unexpected discovery for the researchers.
Many scientists have long believed that sharks cannot inhabit such extremely cold waters; however, this "elusive" predator was captured by an underwater camera. Researcher Alan Jamieson reported that the discovered shark is about 3-4 meters long.
“We did not expect to see a shark, as there is a belief that they do not occur in Antarctica,” added Jamieson.
