In Central Asia, the implementation of new methods for managing transboundary water resources between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is beginning, reports Podrobno.uz.

At recent negotiations between the water management ministers of both countries in Turkestan, the readiness to create a transparent and automated system for distributing water resources was confirmed, which is of particular importance for the agricultural and energy sectors of the region.

One of the key steps will be the complete automation of water resource control on the Syr Darya River. With the help of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), plans are in place to install 10 digital hydrological posts — five in each country. This will ensure maximum transparency of data in real-time and eliminate possible disagreements regarding the volumes of distributed water.

In addition, the countries intend to update physical infrastructure and implement technologies for resource conservation. In 2026, work is planned to modernize the interstate channel "Dostyk," including mechanized cleaning and repair of key structures.

As part of the cooperation, the agencies also agreed on active experience exchange in drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, which will help adapt agriculture to the conditions of global climate change and resource scarcity.
