Deputy fears acid rains in Kyrgyzstan due to events in the Middle East

Mahabat Mavlyanova initiates proposals to strengthen monitoring of environmental threats

At a meeting of the parliamentary committee on agrarian policy, water resources, subsoil use, and ecology, Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Mahabat Mavlyanova raised the issue of the potential threat of acid rains in Kyrgyzstan caused by the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

Mavlyanova noted that attacks on oil refineries in the region could lead to the release of chemicals into the atmosphere, which, in turn, could negatively impact the environmental situation in other countries.

"Our information indicates chemical emissions following attacks on oil refineries. There is a possibility that precipitation could lead to the formation of acid rains," she emphasized.

The deputy questioned whether there are mechanisms in Kyrgyzstan for monitoring such phenomena and identifying regions that may be at risk of such precipitation. She suggested discussing this issue at the government level and strengthening control over potential environmental risks.

Asel Raimkulova, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, responded that the ministry does not conduct such monitoring. According to her, atmospheric phenomena are observed by the "Kyrgyzhydromet" service, which has automated meteorological stations.
