Monument from the village of Chon-Sary-Oy
Light Blue Stone from the Lake
In 1973, during an expedition on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, in the village of Chon-Sary-Oy, we encountered yet another monument of Arabic writing. This is a light blue river boulder, used as a qayrak without special processing. According to teacher K. Musamoldoев, the stone was extracted from the lake several years ago. The inscription on it is made on both sides, extending to the side edges, but the text is poorly visible. Subsequently, the monument was transported to Frunze for further study. In the photograph provided to us by K. Musamoldoев, it can be seen that on one side of the stone, verses from the Quran are carved, identical to those found on the gravestones discovered at the Kungey-Ak-Suu site. They translate as follows: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Allah bears witness that there is no other deity worthy of worship besides Him, and so do the angels and those endowed with knowledge, being firm in the truth, they profess: there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Mighty, the Wise.
Indeed, piety before God is submission (Islam).” On the other side, there is also, apparently, a formula: “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah...” Certain parts remain unreadable for now. The presented image shows the location of the inscription on the surface of the stone (Table XXIII, Fig. I, 2, 3).
