Sahaba-Mazara Monuments

Kaïraks from Sahaba-Mazara

In the second issue of "Epigraphy of Kyrgyzstan," we published 43 kaïraks from Yangy-Naukat. Many small and poorly preserved inscriptions remained unpublished. During a visit to Sahaba-Mazara in 1984, several kaïraks previously published were not found on site, but new stones with inscriptions were discovered. A detailed inventory of the kaïraks at Sahaba-Mazara is yet to be carried out. In this publication, several kaïraks photographed by us in the 1970s are presented. Their numbering continues the numbering of kaïraks from Sahaba-Mazara published by us earlier.

MONUMENT NO. 44

A piece of smoky-colored marble. On the uneven surface of one side — a double frame with intersecting ornamental lines. Arabic text, letters without diacritical points. The inscription is carved with a sharp object.

Part of the text is poorly visible:Sahaba-Mazara Monuments
Translation:
(1) This is the grave
(2) of Fatima, daughter of
(3) Haidar. May Allah forgive
(4) her and her parents.
(5)...............

MONUMENT NO. 45

A smoky (gray) stone. The inscription consists of six lines and is executed carelessly. The stone is located at the Teshik-Tash mazar, at the foot of the mountain, near Sahaba-Mazara. The size of the inscription is 40X40 cm. Published for the first time (Table XVII, Fig. 2, 3).

MONUMENT NO. 46

A stone of irregular shape, smoky in color. Inside a stepped frame is an inscription of five lines in poor condition. The size of the frame is 40X35 cm. Published for the first time (Table XVIII, Fig. 1, 2).

(2) son of Muhammad... Bakr, may [Allah] forgive

Note. The tracing of the text, as far as we know, was done with great difficulty. Therefore, certain places are questionable. Judging by the beginning of the third line, where it says "him and his parents," the monument belongs to a man. However, at the beginning of the second line, the word "daughter" is visible in the tracing. If this is indeed the case, then the inscription is dedicated not to a man but to a woman named Mumina (as suggested by V. Nastic).

MONUMENT NO. 47

The inscription is on the reverse side of the already published kaïrak No. 26. The stone is located at the Teshik-Tash mazar. In the first line, we read:...Sahaba-Mazara Monuments
The prophet said: "Peace be upon him." Then, undoubtedly, follows a quote from the Quran. The inscription is poorly preserved, so a complete reading of it is a task for the future (Table XVIII, Fig. 3, 4).
