Famous Russian traveler Fyodor Konyukhov is preparing his expedition to Lake Issyk-Kul to search for an ancient monastery. This was reported today by Russian media, citing a member of the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Ioann Chechnev.
It is specified that the Russian traveler intends to begin the search for the ancient monastery on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul next year, where, according to legend, a shrine with the relics of Saint Matthew was kept.
“The hypothesis is based on historical facts, in particular, on the famous Catalan map of 1375, which marks the monastery and states that the relics of one of the four evangelists - Saint Matthew - are located there,” said the scholar.
This is not the first attempt to find the ancient monastery at the bottom of Issyk-Kul. Scientists from Kyrgyzstan, together with colleagues from the Russian Academy of Sciences, conduct their scientific expeditions annually.
