Nikolai Mikhailovich PRZHEVALSKY

Nikolai Mikhailovich PRZHEVALSKY (1839—1888) was a Russian scientist and naturalist who explored previously unknown regions of Inner Asia, a major general (1886), and an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1878).

Among his famous journeys through the regions of Ussuri (1867—1869), Mongolia, Tibet, etc., four expeditions to Central and Inner Asia (1870—1885) stand out.

Przhevalsky continued the geographical and natural science research of Russian scholars at a new level. While preparing for his fifth journey to Inner Asia, he contracted typhus in Bishkek and died in the Przhevalsk region in the autumn of 1888. At his request, he was buried on the shores of Issyk-Kul, near the city of Karakol.
