Russian. Born in Leningrad, Russia.
Graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute (1957). Worked as a geologist, head of the party of the East Kazakhstan Geological Administration, junior researcher, senior researcher, head of the laboratory, director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, teacher, associate professor, professor at Novosibirsk State University, head of the department, head of the laboratory at the Institute of Tectonics and Geophysics of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences, director of the Geological Institute of the Buryat Branch of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Presidium of the Buryat Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, since 1988 - member of the Presidium, deputy chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Specialist in geology, mineralogy, metamorphic and magmatic petrology, tectonics, and deep geodynamics.
Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic (2002), Foreign Member of the Korean Academy of Sciences and Technology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Doctor of Changchun Geological University (China).
Awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, medals of the USSR.
Honored Worker of Science of the Buryat ASSR. Laureate of the National Non-Governmental Demidov Prize.
Published more than 500 scientific works, including 30 monographs.
Under his supervision, 10 doctoral and more than 20 candidate dissertations have been defended. Major works:
