Kairak of the Ak-Suu Gumbaz Imam-Ata

MONUMENT AT THE GUMBAZ IMAM-ATA

Near the village of Ak-Suu in the Jangi-Dzhoy district of the Osh region, there is a gumbaz, known to the locals as Imam-Ata. Based on the construction technique and the material from which it is made, the gumbaz can be classified as a monument of late medieval architecture. The building is small, and the dome is partially damaged. Inside the gumbaz, there are several kairaks, one of which has an Arabic inscription written in the suls script and consisting of nine lines. The inscription is carved clearly and elegantly, with diacritical marks. The stone is slate, without special treatment, measuring 90X37 cm. It was examined and stamped by us in the summer of 1979 with the assistance of a local resident, Kadyrlkul Sherkulov.

The inscription on the kairak mentions a certain Amir Zaki ad-Din, the son of Amir Hasan, the son of Amir Najm ad-Din al-Mahmi.

The inscription is published for the first time. Its text was translated by A. T. Tagirdzhanov, a professor at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University, with the assistance of corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences M. N. Bogolyubov.
