Kyrgyzstan will join the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union in 2014
On Monday, a meeting took place in Sochi between the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev. Following the negotiations, the President of Kyrgyzstan announced the country's accession to the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union by the end of the current year.
“We have serious investment plans, especially in energy, and plans for developing cooperation in specific sectors,” Putin stated, commenting on the results of the meeting.
Russian companies will participate in the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1 and the Upper Naryn cascade of hydropower plants.
Atambayev, for his part, emphasized that Kyrgyzstan, as previously planned, intends to join the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union by the end of this year, despite a number of difficulties.
Russia and Kyrgyzstan have agreed on instruments for the development of Kyrgyzstan's economy and its integration into the Customs Union amounting to $500 million, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after the negotiations between the presidents of Russia and Kyrgyzstan: “Agreements have been reached and confirmed regarding the creation of instruments that will allow for the accelerated development of the Kyrgyz economy and harmonize it with integration processes for a total amount of about $500 million.”
Work is currently underway to avoid negative consequences of this step for both the Kyrgyz economy and the countries of the Customs Union.
