Bishkek Humanities University was established on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute of the Russian Language and Literature (PIRYL) by a decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in 1992.

On June 17, 1992, it was transformed into the State Institute of Languages and Humanities (GILH).

According to a decision by the Kyrgyz government on May 8, 1994, the educational institution was renamed Bishkek Humanities University.

Since 2019, it has been referred to as Bishkek State University.

It is named after Academician Kusein Karasaev (1901—1998), a Kyrgyz and Soviet linguist, lexicographer, educator, literary scholar, and folklorist.

BHU has 9 faculties, 4 institutes, 13 international cultural-educational and scientific centers, a lyceum, and a college. The number of students exceeds ten thousand.

The university has faculties in: Oriental Studies and International Relations; German Philology; Information, Social Work, and Psychology; Kyrgyz-Russian Studies; Turkology, Ecology, and Management; Administration and Sociology. Training is conducted in 40 specialties across 33 departments of the university.

Education at the university is offered in 16 languages of the world (English, German, Italian, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc.).

The organizer and first rector of PIRYL was Professor Skirdov V.D. (1979-1986). Subsequent rectors included Professor Yantzen V.K. (1986-1992), Associate Professors Konkobayev K.K. (1992-1994), Turgunaliev T.T. (1994), and Professor Boldzhurova Ishenkul Sadikovna.

Currently, the rector of BHU named after K. Karasaev is Professor A.I. Musaev.

The organization of the educational process at BHU named after K. Karasaev is based on the State Educational Standard and State License No. AЛ 339.
