In 2026, Kyrgyzstan will face a continuing shortage of water resources, as reported by the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, Zhanibek Kerimaliev, on the radio.

He noted that the ministry has been instructed to prepare for the autumn sowing on an area of 250,000 hectares, which significantly exceeds previous volumes when only 100,000–150,000 hectares were cultivated.

Kerimaliev emphasized that this year, despite the dry conditions, 62% of the autumn sowing work has been completed. Previously, many farmers often left their fields uncultivated after the harvest.

“Currently, we are focusing on issues of autumn plowing, moisture accumulation, performing fallow, and preparing the soil for the winter season. This is necessary in the context of increasing climate change and rising aridity,” he added.

According to the first deputy minister, there is already a water shortage in the agricultural sector this year, but the situation has been kept under control.

“We anticipate that in 2026, the water shortage will remain relevant,” noted Kerimaliev.

In this regard, the ministry, through district agricultural development offices, is actively conducting explanatory work with farmers, recommending them to carry out autumn moisture-saving measures.

“If the necessary work is done in the autumn, farmers will be able to avoid problems with moisture shortage in the spring. Those who have accumulated water and conducted fallow treatment will have significantly better seedlings,” he emphasized.

In conclusion, Kerimaliev urged agrarians to continue autumn work, even if there is enough water. “This will contribute to achieving positive results and success for farmers,” he added.
