According to the publication Politico, the war in Iran has provoked an intensification of the power struggle in Europe: Ursula von der Leyen has overstepped her authority by replacing Kaja Kallas. The conflict in the Middle East, which has entered its second week, has caused the European Union to struggle to form a unified stance. Many governments are dissatisfied that von der Leyen is effectively performing functions that traditionally belong to the head of European diplomacy.

In the early days of the crisis, Ursula von der Leyen expressed support for regime change in Tehran and held more than a dozen phone calls with leaders of EU countries and Persian Gulf states.

Critics note that she has repeatedly taken positions that go beyond the consensus among EU member states.

“I thought I was hallucinating… when I saw Ursula von der Leyen calling the leaders of the Persian Gulf,” noted Nathalie Loiseau, a Member of the European Parliament from France. “She has no diplomatic service of her own, she speaks without a mandate and without intelligence data, her words only matter as her personal opinion.”
