Josep Borrell, the former head of European diplomacy, expressed dissatisfaction that the European Union has failed to hold the United States accountable for violations of international law, including the situation in Iran. Borrell accused European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of seeking to seize power and called for the rejection of the trade agreement she signed with Washington, media reports.

He argued that the U.S. war against Iran "does not comply with international law [and] is not justified by an imminent threat," as is sometimes claimed.

According to Borrell, von der Leyen "continues to overstep her authority" by conducting foreign policy that is "clearly indicated" in the foundational treaty of the EU as outside her competence. He also noted that she "systematically shows bias in favor of the U.S. and Israel," despite Europe "suffering from the consequences in terms of energy prices."
