- In Kyrgyzstan, work continues on increasing domestic seed production and developing breeding. This was reported on the radio by Bolotbek Tashtanov, head of the Water Policy and Drinking Water Supply Department of the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to him, at the moment, the country independently provides itself with grain seeds at a level of 20%.

“Currently, we are able to meet our needs for grain seeds at 20%. Plans for 2030 envisage increasing this volume to 37 thousand tons,” he noted.

Tashtanov also added that there are 86 seed-growing farms operating in Kyrgyzstan. Farmers are advised to purchase certified seeds specifically from these farms and nurseries to avoid the risks of buying low-quality seed material.

There are also large companies in the market that import certified seeds from Europe and Russia.

Work on breeding development is being carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Agriculture, including measures to attract new specialists.

“Since the average age of breeders is quite high, we are creating favorable conditions and increasing salaries to attract the younger generation,” Tashtanov added.

In 2024, an agreement was signed with a Russian scientific institute, under which nine varieties of agricultural crops were sown for testing, including drought-resistant varieties.

Additionally, a vegetable seed production plant was opened in the Sokuluk district in collaboration with an agricultural university, which will begin its operations this year.

New varieties imported from abroad are also being tested in the country. For example, one variety of safflower demonstrated a yield of 20 to 22 centners per hectare on rainfed lands.

It is worth noting that Kyrgyzstan has already begun exporting seeds. In 2024, alfalfa seeds were supplied to Russia, and pumpkin seeds to Japan. This year, it is planned to increase the volume of supplies.

Corn seeds are currently undergoing testing in Uzbekistan. If the results are successful, they may be included in the registry for subsequent export. Similar tests are also planned in Belarus.

Furthermore, an agreement has been reached with Dutch companies to build a plant for the production of super elite potato seeds. It is expected that exports will begin in 2–3 years.

A plant for processing grain seeds is also planned to be built in the Chui region.
