Popular products have been linked to worsening mental health

According to a new study, ultra-processed foods not only affect physical health but may also worsen mental well-being. This conclusion was drawn by scientists based on an analysis of data collected from nearly 400,000 participants across 60 countries. The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

The research utilized results from an international survey conducted in 2023, which provided a comprehensive assessment of mental health, including emotional state and cognitive control. Participants also reported how often they consume ultra-processed foods. The data analysis took into account key factors affecting mental health, such as income, physical activity, past traumas, and life stresses.

The identified link between frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods and a decline in mental well-being was clear. Participants who regularly consumed such foods more often experienced symptoms of depression and difficulties with emotional regulation and concentration.

Furthermore, the researchers modeled the effect of ultra-processed foods on the level of clinical mental distress on a global scale. They estimate that between 3.4% and 7.8% of the world's population may suffer from clinically significant mental distress related to the consumption of these products.
