American businessman Elon Musk announced a new strategy for his company SpaceX, which will now focus on creating a self-sufficient city on the Moon. According to him, the implementation of this project is possible within the next ten years. At the same time, he noted that a similar project on Mars will take more than 20 years, as reported by Kazinform.
“Our main goal is to ensure a future for civilization, and the Moon represents a faster option. A flight to Mars is only possible when the planets are in a certain configuration every 26 months, whereas we can send missions to the Moon every 10 days,” he explained.
Musk also added that SpaceX is not abandoning the idea of building a city on Mars and plans to start this project in about five to seven years. Last May, he claimed that the company is working to launch its first unmanned Starship to Mars by the end of 2026, as reported by CNN.
