“We don’t want to end up in a James Cameron movie — in ‘The Terminator’.” Elon Musk urged caution with artificial intelligence

Elon Musk expressed the opinion that companies developing artificial intelligence technologies need to exercise caution to avoid scenarios similar to those depicted in the movie “The Terminator.”

“With robotics and artificial intelligence, we need to act extremely carefully,” Musk noted. “We don’t want reality to resemble James Cameron’s film — ‘The Terminator’.”

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, where Musk spoke alongside Larry Fink, the head of BlackRock, he suggested that by the end of 2026, artificial intelligence could surpass human intelligence, and in five years, it would be smarter than all of humanity combined.

“I can’t predict what will happen in ten years, but judging by the current development of AI, by the end of this year, we might see AI that is smarter than any human, and most likely, this will happen no later than next year,” he added. “I expect that by 2030 or 2031, in five years, AI will be smarter than all of humanity combined.”

According to Musk, artificial intelligence and robots could contribute to unprecedented economic growth, and he also announced Tesla’s plans to launch sales of humanoid robots.

“If all goes according to plan, we intend to start selling robots by the end of next year,” he stated.

Musk is confident that the number of robots and AI will become so large that they will be able to fully meet the needs of humanity. “I predict that there will be more robots than people,” he noted.

The billionaire also emphasized that robots will change society by freeing people from manual labor, and the time will come when machines will produce other robots.

He added that “everyone on the planet” would want a robot to take care of elderly relatives or children. “Who wouldn’t want a safe robot to look after babies or pets?” Musk questioned.

The goals of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, and Starlink, according to Musk, are “to maximize the probability that civilization will have a bright future.”

Additionally, he outlined a timeline for sending humans to Mars, stating that it may take another ten years.

“If civilization continues to develop, people will be able to reach Mars within 5-10 years,” Musk said. Last May, he planned to launch the first crewed spacecraft in 2027-2028.

He also noted that it is more important not just to land on Mars, but to create a fully self-sustaining settlement there: “It is really important to build a self-sustaining civilization on Mars, which will take another 20-30 years.”

“I believe the future will be amazing; incredible things await us. Starship is the first rocket capable of this, and as soon as it is ready to fly to Mars, the future of civilization will be secured.”
