PM2.5 refers to fine particles smaller than 2.5 microns, which are 30 times smaller than a human hair. They consist of dust, ash, soot, as well as sulfates and nitrates suspended in the air. These substances are responsible for the hazy state of the atmosphere typical of large cities.
As of February 21, Bishkek ranks 83rd in the world air quality and pollution ranking (5:00 PM).
