Salaries in universities do not please teachers

Will starting salaries for young specialists be increased?

According to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the average salary in Kyrgyzstan from January to June 2025 was 42,020 soms, which is an increase compared to the previous year.

However, many citizens of the country point out the prevalence of low wages. For example, teachers in state universities receive between 10,000 and 15,000 soms monthly. Similarly, the starting salaries of doctors beginning their careers in state medical institutions, as well as technical staff in educational institutions, also remain low.

“This situation persists to this day. We are talking about new teachers who are offered low salaries, despite the fact that the minimum living wage in the country is around 8,800 soms. Therefore, many of them perceive their job as a starting stage of their career and soon look for more lucrative options, moving to government structures or business. Usually, they remain on a low salary to gain experience,” noted economist Arslan Omurzakov in an interview with Vesti.kg.

The expert added that more experienced teachers, with years of service, awards, and titles, receive higher salaries.

“Inflation also has a significant impact on salary levels in Kyrgyzstan. It is accelerating, mainly due to external factors. We are importing inflation, as our trade balance shows a predominance of imports over exports. Although according to the latest data, inflation has slowed to 8.4%, by the end of the year it may rise again to 10%. External shocks and economic turbulence affect our country, which is vulnerable to such events. I believe the government should take measures to increase salaries that are at a low level. Otherwise, young teachers, doctors, and other specialists will continue to leave the field. Support is needed to motivate citizens to work in the public sectors,” added Omurzakov.

Despite the increase in the average salary in Kyrgyzstan, which now exceeds 42,000 soms, significant variability in income negatively affects the standard of living of the population.

“In more stable sectors, such as finance, services, and construction, higher salaries are offered. However, not everyone is eager to work in these areas. A balance is needed,” concluded the economist.
